- AIM OF THE GAME
-
-
- The aim of the game is to consume as many correctly
- spelled words as possible. To do so it is necessary to eat the
- letters that make up each word in the correct
- sequence. Points are awarded for each letter eaten in the
- correct sequence and deducted for each letter eaten out of
- sequence.
-
- The game has some inbuilt hazards and rewards and
- can be played at 4 levels of difficulty. Masters of level 4 may
- be ready for "Codeworm".
-
- WORDWORM is based upon the recognition that not
- all words lend themselves to neat rules of spelling. Such words
- are largely mastered by repetition and recognition of what the
- correctly spelled word looks like. WORDWORM uses a basic
- dictionary of frequently misspelt words and a game strategy
- that reinforces the correct spelling of these words. You can
- add particular words that your child or student finds
- troublesome to this basic dictionary or create your own
- separate dictionary.

- Levels 1 - 4
-
- At levels 1-4 the word to be spelt appears at the top left-hand
- corner of the screen and the letters which make up the word
- are randomly scattered across the screen. Your mission is to
- eat the letters in the correct sequence to create the word.
-
-
- F1 - Level 1
-
- Worm speed is slow. The word you are trying to eat will stay
- in the left hand upper corner of the screen and the next letter
- required will appear in a different colour. Letters will not
- usually appear at the edges of the screen.
-
-
- F2 - Level 2
-
- Worm speed is faster. The word will stay on the screen but
- the next letter will not be highlighted. Letters will appear near
- the edges of the screen and carry bonus points.
-
-
- F3 - Level 3
-
- Increase in worm speed. Each word will only appear for a
- short time at the beginning of each round. Occasionally you
- will experience uncontrolled growth after eating a letter.
-
-
- F4 - Level 4
-
- Maximum worm speed. The word only flashes on the screen
- at the beginning. Occasionally you will experience
- uncontrolled growth after eating a letter.
- Codeworm
-
- At Codeworm level the word does not initially appear in the
- top left-hand corner of the screen. The letters which make up
- the mystery word are randomly scattered across the screen.
- Your task is to guess the mystery word and eat the letters in
- the correct sequence to create the word, letter by letter.
-
-
- F5 - Codeworm
-
- Maximum word speed. The word does not appear on the
- screen, you must decipher it.

-
- RULES OF THE GAME
-
- Fatal mistakes
-
- The worm must not run into itself, the sides of the screen or
- barriers that occasionally appear on the screen.
-
- Growth
-
- The more letters and words that the worm eats, the bigger it
- grows. The bigger the worm grows, the more difficult it is to
- move around the screen without making fatal mistakes.
-
- Uncontrolled bursts of growth sometimes occur after eating a
- letter in all levels above Level 2.
-
- Shrinking potion and barriers
-
- Occasionally you are given an opportunity to reduce your size
- by drinking a flask of shrinking potion. You must avoid the
- barriers and reach the flask before it disappears.
-
- Bonus points
-
- Letters may appear next to the sides of the screen in all levels
- above Level 1. Bonus points are awarded for eating these
- letters.
-
- Sleep
-
- To make things more difficult the worm will occasionally sleep
- for a short time. Be ready when it starts to move again!

- type in your name and press the Enter key. You may erase
- any mistakes by using the Backspace key.
-
- HELPFUL HINTS
-
-
- Don't panic!
-
- It takes a while to become accustomed to moving the worm
- around the screen. You must turn the worm, you cannot
- reverse the direction that the worm is travelling in. Don't
- hold down the keys!!!
-
- Spurts of growth
-
- There is a slight delay before the worm grows after eating a
- word. Take advantage of this brief period to redirect the
- worm if it is headed towards an obstacle. Otherwise you may
- find yourself running into a wall very quickly.
-
- Don't become complacent! Uncontrolled spurts of growth can
- randomly occur after eating any letter at levels 3, 4 and 5.
-
- Pause the game
-
- Press the spacebar to pause the game. Press the spacebar to
- restart. A penalty will be incurred for pausing
- WORDWORM.
-
- For the truly desperate
-
- If you press F6 during a game at levels 3 and 4, the highlighted
- word will momentarily flash. A penalty of 25 points will be
- deducted from your score.
-
- At Codeworm level, only the first 3 letters of the word will
- appear.
